The Relationship between Your Health and Nutrition

Ever heard of the phrase, you are what you eat? This statement is true. One of the most significant contributors to human health is nutrition. When we talk of nutrition, it means what you eat and drink. Nutrition helps prevent so many non-communicable diseases, helps manage your blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol. In life, what you eat plays such a significant role such that ignoring it is detrimental to your health.

Noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and some cancers can result from poor nutrition. It is predicted that by 2030, non-communicable diseases will account for almost three-quarters of deaths worldwide. It is therefore important to ensure people have proper nutrition.

What is nutrition?

Before we go further to discuss the ramifications of nutrition on your health, what is nutrition? Easily explained, nutrition is the intake of food in relation to your body’s dietary needs. Good or proper nutrition refers to a sufficient and balanced diet coupled with regular exercise.

Why is good nutrition vital for your health?

Proper nutrition is important for mental and physical development. It allows one to reach his or her full potential either at work or school. It also helps build a stronger immune system protecting us from communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Poor nutrition plays a huge role in the burden of disease. An unhealthy diet is the biggest cause of deaths in the world. It accounts for approximately 11 million deaths every year. This is one reason UNICEF embarked on a mission to help feed the poor in developing countries. Without food and proper nutrition, it is hard for people in some of these areas to reach their full potential. Up to date, UNICEF supports feeding programs and advocates for building a healthier community through proper nutrition.

The relationship between nutrition and good health is therefore straightforward and self-explanatory. Good nutrition is with no doubt the key to a healthier lifestyle. A balanced diet combined with exercise is what can be termed as proper nutrition. A balanced diet should contain six of the most important nutrients which help keep your body healthy. These are:

  • Proteins
  • Vitamins
  • Fats
  • Minerals
  • Carbohydrates
  • Water

Life is dependent on food. It thrives on food and the substance containing food and on which life is dependent on are the nutrients. These provide all the important substances for the growth and survival of all living things. Take care of what you eat and exercise regularly for a healthy lifestyle.
