Rose hips are a rich source of vitamin C. Almost 100 g of dried Rosehips provide 1700-2000 mg vitamin C. It is useful for treating arthritis, symptoms of osteoarthritis related to the hip and knee. Moreover, it also has antioxidant action to protect tissues from free radical damage. It also prevents scurvy; helps to protect joints and connective tissues; protects adrenal function; potential to prevent urinary bladder infections, and facilitate the treatment of dizziness and headaches;  transdermal application in the form of oil to restore firmness to skin by soothing and astringing tissue; brewed into a decoction, can also be used to treat dizziness and headaches. Iron is also abundantly present in rose hips, that’s why it is commonly used to make up iron loss during menstruation. It is also beneficial in treating constipation1.

Benefits of Rose Hips

Anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving qualities of rose hips have been employed in traditional and folk medicine for ages.

Anti-aging properties

Rosehip oil is a famous anti-aging ingredient in the cosmetics industry, despite the lack of studies to back up its claims. It's prepared by extracting the natural oils from rose hips after they've been cold-pressed. Polyunsaturated fats are abundantly present in rosehip seeds, which help to maintain a healthy skin barrier and shield it against inflammatory substances like UV radiation, cigarette smoke, and pollution.

Taking 3 mg of rosehip powder daily for 8 weeks resulted in a substantial reduction in skin wrinkles as well as an improvement in skin moisture content and elasticity. According to experts, rose hips have a high antioxidant, vitamin C, and fatty acid composition, which all preserve and renew your skin barrier.

Furthermore, direct application of vitamin C to the skin has been found to boost the production of collagen and cell turnover (the rate at which skin cells replace themselves). As a result, items high in vitamin C naturally, such as rosehip oil, may have anti-aging properties. Rosehip oil may also help to heal wounds. In the latest studies, rats treated with this oil healed wounds quicker and had fewer scars than the control group. More human research is required to confirm such benefits of rosehip oil.

May reduce arthritis pain

The effectiveness of rose hips on osteoarthritis pain has been extensively researched. One of the most prevalent kinds of arthritis, osteoarthritis affects 10% and 13% of men and women above the age of 60.  It is characterized by a slow loss of cartilage in your joints, which can cause swelling and excruciating pain.

Using rose hips supplements may help improve symptoms of osteoarthritis by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the joints, according to a recent assessment of 24 research. According to a study of three trials, persons who took rosehip powder were twice as likely to report relief from osteoarthritis pain.

The small number of studies still presents risks. Furthermore, according to a recent study, rose hips decreased pain and stiffness in osteoarthritis patients but did not increase range of motion.  Although rose hips seem to help with pain associated with osteoarthritis additional study is needed to determine the best doses.

May help with fat loss

Rose hips have been investigated as a possible fat-burning supplement. In a 12-week trial of 32 adults, consuming a 100-mg rosehip pill every day reduced belly fat considerably when compared to the control group. According to the researchers, this result was related to tiliroside, a powerful antioxidant that may enhance fat metabolism.  A lot of rodent investigations have confirmed this effect. However, an additional in-depth study is required2.

Gastrointestinal Problems

Rosehip is beneficial to treat ulcers of the stomach, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal issues for decades. There is significant evidence that this age-old treatment works. By adjusting the stomach pH balance, rose hips seem to lessen the incidence of ulcers. It may produce a toxic atmosphere for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), the bacterium that is primarily responsible for ulcer formation. More study is needed to verify these findings.

Diabetes

Rosehip may assist control diabetes, according to preliminary studies, especially in patients who have risk factors like hypertension and obesity. According to the researchers, the rosehip was able to balance blood sugar levels and keep cholesterol in balance.  Based on in-vitro and animal investigations, it has been believed that chemicals in the plant encourage the proliferation of beta cells in the pancreas, which are capable of insulin production. Despite the positive results, there has been virtually no study into the use of rosehip in people with type 2 diabetes3.

Special Precautions and Warnings

Rosehip is not safe to use as medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding since not enough and solid information is available. To be on the safe side, limit your food intake.

Kidney stones: Rosehip may raise the risk of kidney stones when taken in big dosages. This is because rose hips contain vitamin C4.
